Kind Words

Monday's Devotion (2-4-08)

"Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips." Proverbs 27:2 (KJV)

This verse is important because if we're praising ourselves then we're not being that bright light for Jesus. At the same time if we don't hear encouraging words from others then we get down on ourselves. It's better to hear praise from someone else than from yourself. If you were to say about yourself that you're "Righteous," then someone else might say that you're "self-righteous." Self-righteous people are the same people that are preventing some from coming to the Lord with their "holier than thou" attitudes. However, if someone else said that you were righteous then that would encourage you to keep going forward. It's weird because when people are doing good even they need a pat on the back, even they need encouragement to continue on and not give up. It's not just those who are down that need to be lifted up, sometimes it's those who are doing good already.

Another way to look at this is by looking at all those who have or think about committing suicide. I hear that the suicide rate for American soldiers has risen. How much would that rate have risen had the American people showed more support for these people who are doing a fine job of serving our country? Maybe a pat on the back would've saved some of their lives. A kind word to a stranger may save their life, just like a bad word may take their life. We don't know what people go through in their every day lives, we don't always realize that we could push someone that we don't even know over the edge with just one harsh word. Maybe if we were all more considerate, if we all gave a kind word to others we could save lives. The reason that this subject is so close to my heart is because there was a time in my life where I was always depressed. People always said negative things to me and I thought about suicide before. I could see how easily someone could be pushed over the edge. I'm talking about before I was saved, accepting Jesus into my heart really helped me with this. The unconditional love of God is a healing power and that's because love is a healing power. Love can make all the difference. Remember this, not just with your family and friends... But with strangers and even enemies. You might think your enemy is a horrible person, but they might just need love in their life. I got off subject a bit I see, but I'm just speaking my heart. Suicide prevention is simply this: Show your love and appreciation for others. What prevented me from going too far was thinking about those around me and how it would effect them. I thought about how they would be hurt, so obviously I knew that I was loved. So many don't know this and that's why they often succeed in suicide.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this message and for all things. Please forgive us of all our sins as we forgive all those who've sinned against us. Please help us to be positive, caring and encouraging towards our fellow men and women. Also help us not to praise ourselves and to think too highly of ourselves and to put that towards thinking more highly of others. In Jesus name. A-men!

God bless!
