Conceit

Tuesday's Devotion (5-1-07)

"Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips." Proverbs 27:2 (KJV)

Sorry for the delay in today's devotion, I couldn't get to sleep all night and once I did I slept in too late. But anyway, let's get on with this!

Have you ever heard someone praise themselves? I think we all have, and at times we have praised ourselves. But when you hear it, it sounds so sickening. It's always good to get a compliment from someone else, but to praise yourself is just wrong. There's a difference in being confident in yourself, and being conceited. We need to be confident, but we need to not be conceited at the same time. Now, if I was to say, "I'm great at doing these daily devotions," that would be sickening. And it's not my place to say, you all read these things so really it is you that should decide whether or not they're any good. Let's look at this in another way: When you watch television you'll see several commercials. Let's say that you see a Pepsi commercial and they're talking about how good their brand of soda is... That means nothing to you right? Because you know that they're just trying to sell themselves, but once you try the product for yourself you can determine whether or not it's any good. What I'm trying to say is that if we're advertising ourselves, trying to sell ourselves, that doesn't mean anything! That doesn't prove anything!

Not to mention being conceited is a form of self-worship. We're not to worship anyone except the Lord. But also, since we're not supposed to praise (compliment,) ourselves then we do need others to do that. We need others to encourage us with encouraging words. If you were over-weight and you lost a 100 pounds, it's nice to hear that someone notices. It helps keep you motivated, helps you keep up the good work. So, what I'm saying is that it wouldn't hurt us to encourage each other and say good things to each other.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this message and for all things. Please forgive us of all our sins as we forgive all those who've sinned against us. Help us to encourage our fellow man with words and with action. Also, don't let us be conceited or praising of ourselves. In Jesus name. A-men!

God bless
