Be An Example

Wednesday's Devotion (4-25-07)

"Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:19 (KJV)

If you want to be great in the Kingdom of Heaven, it isn't enough to simply teach God's commandments... You must obey them as well! That's really where it gets tricky for some of us. I found that me personally and other ministers that teach will do this: We'll teach a certain commandment, and then later that night find ourselves breaking that commandment. It's like when we teach to obey a certain commandment, our flesh just says, "Is that right? Not going to be as easy as it sounds boy!" Our flesh is very vindictive when it comes to the things of the Spirit.

Let's get to the bottom line here: It's going to be impossible to never break any commandments, we're breaking them all of the time. However, we have to be consistently trying to obey the scriptures in order to be great in the Kingdom of Heaven. You can't say, "Thou shalt not steal," and then go to the store and purposely steal expecting to be great in the Kingdom of Heaven! You have to be one minded, meaning you can't have double standards and tell someone else not to do something that you're doing. You have to stop doing it too!

One thing that always got me, is when parents tell their children not to do the things that they themselves do. I remember my dad telling me not to get addicted to smoking like he did, because at one time I was a smoker. He said these things are, "Cancer sticks." Here is my dad in his 60s and he started smoking when he was like 10, telling me that smoking will kill you. How was I to believe that? It's the truth, but how I was I to believe it with him as an example? And with him still being alive after smoking for so long? He never made it to see his 70s, and only God knows if that had anything to do with his smoking... But my point is that you must not only teach, but you must be a living, breathing example. Just keep that in mind with raising your children and with raising yourself up in the Lord, and with teaching others the things of the Spirit. I have always taken this seriously, but that doesn't mean that I've always followed it. I'll admit that I've had my share of problems with obeying this one and the problems never cease in this area! It's an on-going war! It won't end until Jesus comes and ends it!

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this message and for all things. Please forgive us of all our sins as we forgive all those who've wronged us. Help us to teach and to obey your Word. Don't let us just be hearers, but make us doers as well. In Jesus name. A-men!

God bless
