Do You Really Fear God?
Saturday's Devotion (4-24-04)
"Ye shall not therefore oppress one another; but thou shalt fear thy God: for I am the LORD your God." Leviticus 25:17 (KJV)
If we fear God, we would not do any harm to anyone. We would not oppress anyone. The word oppress covers a lot. I believe that these scriptures are telling us not to cause any harm to anyone. If I say, "I fear God!" then I go out and do something really hateful to someone, then I am lying! If you fear God, you obey God, it is that simple! If I fear God, I will do what He wants me to do, because I fear Him!
God, tells us to fear Him, but it isn't the kind of fear that you would think. He doesn't want you to be afraid to come to Him, but He wants you to depart from evil! That is basically the only way to be saved as well. You must depart from evil and repent of it. You must ask for forgiveness and try not to commit that sin again. You must accept Jesus Christ and ask Him to change you. The Bible instructs us how to live and if we do not obey the Word, how can we say, "I fear God!"?
The word, "Fear" in these scriptures means this, "Extreme reverence or awe, as toward a supreme power." The word, "Reverence" means, "1. A feeling of profound awe and respect and often love; veneration. See Synonyms at honor. 2. An act showing respect, especially a bow or curtsy. 3. The state of being revered." Lets look at meaning number two for the word, "Reverence" It says, "An act showing respect, especially a bow or curtsy." Our reverence to God, is more than a bow. Reverence to God, is following each and everyone of His commandments, as long as we live. Do you have reverence for God? Do you fear the Lord? Ask the people around you, if you're not sure. They can tell you, by how you've treated them.
Of course we all mess up and treat people bad from time to time, but is your time to time, all the time? It isn't right to do it, even from time to time, but lets face it we do that sometimes. We're not perfect, but the question is, "Do you do it all the time?" Pray for a change! Pray for the fear of God!
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this message and for all things. Please forgive us of all our sins and we forgive all those who've wronged us. Please give us fear and reverence towards you. Help us to do right and bring us closer to you. In Jesus, name. A-men!
God bless!
