Do More Than Required!

Monday's Devotion (8-4-03)

"Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away." Matthew 5:38-42 (KJV)

If we lived by these scriptures, we'd really be heaping some coals on our enemy's heads! Our enemies, wouldn't know what to think of us. They'd think, "I sued them for one thing and they gave me something else, with it? What kind of people are they?" We'd really be being a light, if we didn't just read the Word of God, but lived it too. I try to live it, but I'll admit that I get caught up in my flesh, sometimes. Sometimes, is a lot of times, too. I need work, in areas as we all do. Anyway can you imagine, how much our lights would shine, if we did the things, mentioned here. Your enemy, would wonder what would make you do such a thing.

Also, these scriptures say, if someone wants you to go a mile with them, go with them two miles. I think there's a deeper meaning here. I think it's saying, if someone asks of us, we need to go out of our way and do more than they asked. Say someone asked you to carry in their groceries. Don't just carry them in, but help them put it away. Also, when someone wants to borrow from us, we're not to turn them away. We need to look at ourselves and ask, "Am I living by these scriptures?" These are some hard scriptures, to follow sometimes. If we do God's will and that's to give, He will provide for us!

These scriptures also tell us, not to resist evil. Sometimes, we make a point to get away from certain people. Maybe, we're afraid they'll try something. Let's say you have business to do at the bank and there's someone there starting trouble. Don't leave, until your business is done! Trust God, to protect you! If someone slaps you on the cheek, give them the other to slap too. Don't run away from them, but don't go down to their level either. This might seem funny, to some of you and I think it was pretty funny myself. When I was younger, in elementary school. I had a bully who got off at the same stop as me. Anyway, one time he said, "I'm gonna kick your butt!" I said, "Go ahead!" Then I bent over for him to kick me in the butt! I didn't run, I took it! I didn't fight back though, because that just wasn't my way. I never was a fighter, really. I didn't even know of these scriptures and I didn't follow the Lord, then either. Don't try to get even with your attackers. Do not stoop, to their level.

God bless!
