Selfish Prayers!

Saturday's Devotion (7-19-03)

"Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? Seeing thou hatest instruction, and casteth my words behind thee. When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers. Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit. Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son. These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver. Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God." Psalm 50: 14-23 (KJV)

I hear of people, who don't follow God, then when they're in trouble they call upon Him. But their prayers go unanswered. Why are their prayers going unanswered? Because they're only calling on God, 'cause they're in trouble and when they're not in trouble, they could care less about God! God, doesn't have a covenant with people who don't follow Him. The ones that He will save and show salvation to, are the ones who follow Him and keep His commandments. Don't get me wrong, if you sin, all you have to do is ask for forgiveness. We all sin and fall short of the glory of God. However the ones with unanswered prayers, that just come to God, when they're in trouble don't ask for forgiveness or a relationship with God. They just want their problems solved, it's really selfish of them! What would you tell me, if we knew each other and the only time I called you, was when I was in trouble? What if I called you, after two years and said, "Hi, how are you? I'm in a bad rut, can I borrow $5000?" Would you give me the money, if you had it or would you realize the reason I called you and not give me a dime? God, knows our heart and He knows, if we're calling on Him, just because we want something from Him or if we want Him. It's sad, so many people call on God, only when they're in trouble or a relative is dying. Well, enough about those kind of people. Let's talk about the people who do follow God! These people pray everyday and seek God, whether they're in trouble or not. Let's say I'm your good friend and I talk to you, everyday and you know I love you. Anyway I call you and say, "Hi, it's me David. I'm in a bad rut and need your help. Can I borrow some money, please?" You'd give it to me then, right? Because you would know, that I care about you and I'm not just using you for money. Anyway, the people who are the friends/children of God, are the ones God, will help. Because, they please God and they truly love Him. These people, keep God's commandments and thank Him, even when they feel there is nothing to thank Him for! Also, one more thing that will cause your prayers, to not get answered is this: If you go out and rob a bank and say, "It's ok God, will forgive me!" then ask God, for forgiveness and go out and do it again, that's not loving God! To love God, is to refrain from hurting God! Sin, hurts God! Do not sin willfully! Selfish, prayers will go unanswered! If you're someone, who feels you've just been using God, in a selfish way, let's say a prayer. You can enter into God's family and have a real relationship with Him!

Prayer: Dear Father, in Heaven. I come to you right now and ask for forgiveness. Forgive me of all my sins and forgive me, for being selfish and not caring about your feelings. Change me and let me enter into your family. In Jesus, name. A-men!
