Be Of A Cheerful Countenance!

Tuesday's Devotion (6-24-03)

"A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken."  Proverbs 15:13 (KJV)

Sometimes as human beings, we tend to get depressed and when we do, we really show it sometimes. Just like when we're happy, we show it. A cheerful countenance, is to be cheerful and have a smile or just to look happy. When we're depressed, our spirits are broken and sometimes we get rude with others or we just don't look or act happy. My point is, our attitude and our faces, make an impression to others of what kind of person we are. If we're always depressed or look depressed, we're not going to be a shining light for the Lord! I go through depression and when I do, people know it! I'm not a good witness and I don't have a cheerful look on my face. People could look at me and get depressed, themselves. However, when I'm happy others around me are happier, than they were when I was depressed. When we go through depression, we need to pray about it and try to get out of it. We can't allow ourselves, to go further into it. If you're anything like me, you're probably saying, "That's easy for you to say!" I've said that one to my wife a lot. There are times, I just get so depressed I don't even want to sing praise. My wife will say, "Sing to the Lord and that'll help!" Then I'll say, "I don't want to!" If I don't do it, I'll get more and more depressed. Singing praise is a good weapon, against depression. We can't allow ourselves to sit around in self pity. That's all depression is, it's self pity! If you're always depressed because of something that happened to you, that's self pity. We need to look at these things, that make us depressed and find something positive about them. It's not always easy, but we need to do this. We need to talk and think of positive things and not the negative. I still have a problem doing this and guess what? I'm still going through depression! The times that I've tried speaking positive, I've felt a lot better. But then something would come along and steal my joy again. We can't let this happen. I'm going to look at my problems and tell you at least one positive thing about them, right now. That one positive thing is, I'm writing on this site and I'm able to help others going through the same thing. Sometimes, we need to help others, to get our mind off our own problems. I'm not saying, go and tell someone to stop stealing if you're doing the same thing. That's just being a hypocrite. What I am saying is, if you're going through depression and even when you're not, go out of your way to help someone else. If they're hungry give them food and ETC. Sometimes, to get out of self pity, we just need to look at other people's problems. I don't care who you are, there is always someone else with worse problems. We need to just be thankful we aren't in their shoes and we should try to help them! Let's try to be of a cheerful countenance! Sing praise and worship the Lord!

Prayer: Dear Lord, please forgive us for all of our sins and we forgive those who've done us wrong. We ask you to help us be of a cheerful countenance and not to sit around in self pity. Help us to find the good, out of our bad situations. Thank you, Lord! In Jesus, name. A-men!

God bless!
