Don't Fall By The Way Side!
Wednesday's Devotion (6-11-03)
"A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock [are they], which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of [this] life, and bring no fruit to perfection. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep [it], and bring forth fruit with patience." Luke 8:5-15 (KJV)
The main things about this parable are trusting God and believing His Word. The first part of the parable is this, "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved." The devil, comes and steals God's Word, from some Christians. You might say, "How does he steal the Word?" He steals it by bringing doubt and making you believe it's a lie. Once you start doubting God's Word, you're letting Satan, rob the Word from you. The Word, is our spiritual food and if you let Satan, steal it we spiritually starve to death! However, if you stand firm and don't let Satan, steal the Word, from you, you will be saved! If you believe God's Word, you will be saved. So Satan, wants to bring unbelief so that you might be condemned! He does this in many different ways. One way he might steal the Word, from a new believer is this: He might bring persecution or you could get fired from your work place and say, "Forget this, God, isn't real or this wouldn't happen!" But that's not true the bible warns us of the persecution of being a Christian. This isn't just for new Christians either, but for old ones too. You're never too old of a Christian, for Satan, to steal the Word from you! However, you can be too mature of a Christian for him to do it. You can become too mature by reading the bible daily and through prayer. If you get fired from a job take a look at Romans 8:28, God, has a better plan for you!
The second part of the parable is, "They on the rock [are they], which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away." The devil, is always there to tempt us and if we have no root we will fall away. We can do nothing unless we're attached to the vine (Jesus Christ). To have a root, we must have the Word of God, always in remembrance. To have the Word of God, always in remembrance, we need to read the bible daily! Without the Word of God, we're setting ourselves up for a fall and once we fall we'll say, "What happened? I thought God, was supposed to hold me up!" Don't blame God, blame yourself! There are some things you need to do for yourself, to hold yourself up and that's prayer, read God's Word, believe and obey God's Word.
The third part of the parable, "And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of [this] life, and bring no fruit to perfection." Some people hear God's Word, but they don't do anything with it. They go on with life and live just like they did before they were saved. They worry about worldly problems like finances, food and ETC, instead of trusting God. Not only that, but they continue pleasing themselves and not God. They might have sex unmarried, gamble, steal or whatever. Eventually these people fall away from God, too. You might say, "Well, how can He say I will fall away? I'm in control of that!" In away you're in control, but in away you're not. If you don't bear the peaceable fruit of God, God, himself will cut you off the vine (Jesus Christ). He will harden your heart against Him. Now you might say, "Why would He do that?" One reason, because you're a pleaser of yourself and you don't really love God! He doesn't want to force Himself on you, so if you continue in wrongful ways you will fall!
The last part of the parable, "But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep [it], and bring forth fruit with patience." These are the people who don't fall away, A.K.A. "The righteousness of God!" The reasons they don't fall away are: They read God's Word and keep it, meaning do the Word and not just listen. They bring forth fruit by letting God, flow throw them and obeying God's Word. They bring forth this fruit with patience, because they wait on the Lord. No matter what comes along they say, "God, is faithful! I know His Word and it is truth! He will help me!" Then they wait as long as it takes and the Lord, delivers them. They do that instead of saying, "I got fired! What? There must not be a God! Forget Him!" We need to know God's Word, we need to read it daily. Once we know His promises and keep His commandments, we're on the right track! I hope today's message helps you. The best advice any believer can give another is, "Read God's Word daily!" All the answers are there and not with any man! God's Word, is living and active. God, has sent you an invitation to Heaven and that invitation is in the bible! Open the bible and take out your invitation (The Word) so you can come to the party!
God bless!
