Blasphemy Against The Holy Spirit

Tuesday's Devotion (5-13-03)

"He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy [against] the [Holy] Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the [world] to come." Matthew 12:30-32 (KJV)

There is a lot of talk surrounding what exactly is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. I looked up the definition of the word blasphemy, this is what it says: 1 a : the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God b : the act of claiming the attributes of deity 2 : irreverence toward something considered sacred or inviolable

Now let's look at the meaning here, if we insult the Spirit or try to put ourselves above it. Here's an example, if someone believed that they didn't need the Spirit and that they believed that they didn't need the Spirit to be saved that they can be saved because of the good things they do. This is what I get out of it.

If we insult the Spirit, that also is blasphemy. We need to see the Spirit, the same way we see God or Jesus because all three of them are one. I know what some of you are thinking, "Well, if that's the case it's too late because I got the thoughts in my head!" This is something I believe that Satan, does to pretty much all Christians that are truly seeking God because he wants us to feel like we have blown it and that we might as well give up. Once you are saved you belong to Jesus, look at what Jesus says, "And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day." John 6:39 (KJV) Satan would want nothing more than for you to give up and feel like it is all over for you, but if you pay attention, you'll notice that Jesus, said, "And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing..." He didn't say that he would lose some, he said he'd lose nothing. So, what God, gave his son, Jesus, is his to keep. God, doesn't play like us humans, where they change their minds if they decide a week later, they want it back to keep for themselves.

I went through a period were I felt that I'd committed blasphemy against the Spirit, but I realized that it's not ourselves that keeps us in the word or gives us the desire to want to know more about God and his son, is the Holy Spirit. Before I was saved I never wanted to keep in the word and learn more about Jesus. I was more into reading other books. It wasn't because of me that I asked Jesus, into my heart and and accepted him as lord and savior. I was chosen by God, the Spirit, is our comforter and it ministers unto us. It's the Holy Spirit that brings things to remembrance from God's Word. Let's think for a minute if we really committed this sin, how could we still be have the desire to please the Lord? Even though we don't always feel the Lord's presence, doesn't mean that he's not there with us. It'd be like someone saying, "I don't believe that God is everywhere because I can't see him." Since we can't see him, does that mean he's not there? It's like saying, "I don't believe there's a bottom to the ocean floor because I've never seen it." If we felt God's presence all the time, we really wouldn't appreciate it because it'd turn into something we didn't have faith and believe that he's there. "Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed [are] they that have not seen, and [yet] have believed." John 20:29 I know that when I do feel God's presence, it really is a blessing to me. Once God, says something, that's the way it is.

So, we need to stop giving into Satan lies and stop going off of our own understanding and feeling and believe God's Word. Start speaking it. I hope this has helped clear this blasphemy sin up for you, I know it has helped for me. We must press on and keep in the Word and only believe the Word! Don't go off what man says.

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)
